If you’ve ever used mitten hooks you know they can be a PITA to use, add cold hands and they’re nearly impossible.
I was working on a gear project using mitten hooks in part of a tie out system for my bug bivy. Realizing what a difficult time I was having I decided to sacrifice one for modification in the name of science, backpacking and my sanity.
Using nippers or scissors cut the tip off the straight springy part. That’s it…you’re done!
Now the hooks are easy to slip over and release from larger cord, as long as there is some tension the hook will hold.
I agree, these things are a pain to get on and off of just about anything… so like you, I have snipped all of mine too… and it is soooo much better!
Great idea. Think these are easier to use than the tiny carabiners with gloves/cold hands?
It depends on how you plan to use them, mini biners will be stronger an can haul up a food bag, where as mitten hooks are non weight-bearing. Kinda like rubber bands they only go so far then snap there goes everything kinda like misbehaving umbrellas.
Ah yes, must be smart to prevent the gear misbehaviour.
Been enough trouble with that lately.
Yep. I’ve been cutting off that little piece ever since I started using tarps with doors.
that’s been what…since I posted this…hahahaha…lol! -}
Ahhhh, right.
Just love all the little ideas that make life easier. Blogs like yours and Sticks have helped me out tremendously with gear selection, tips, and tricks. I enjoy reading all the comments, usally get a good chuckle from time to time. Keep up the great work and maybe will meet on the trail.
